and had enlisted his best childhood
friend, Al Eder, to be his partner. The company was
renamed Dodds & Eder soon after.
In 1973, twenty-year-old Joe McLaughlin replaced retiring
John Dodds and became the new business partner of sixty-eight-year-old
Al Eder. Six years later, Al Eder retired but continued
to work for the company until he was eighty-five! In 1984,
Joe's brother, Dave McLaughlin, joined the company and
helped develop the landscape design and installation as
well as maintenance divisions. Dave held a horticultural
degree and a Masters in Business. Prior to joining the
company, he was Director of Floriculture in Kansas City,
Missouri, and Director of Greenhouses at Planting Fields
Arboretum in Oyster Bay, New York.
Meanwhile, Joe began to implement his vision for "outdoor
elegance" on the retail side. The idea of blending
fine outdoor furnishings and accents to adorn the great
gardens we were creating seemed like a natural way for
Dodds and Eder to grow. Positive customer response confirmed
this idea and moved the company forward. In 1987 Dodds
& Eder moved to its present location on South Street
in Oyster Bay, NY and continues to expand with the changing
needs of its clients. Today, our outdoor furniture department
is a regional presence, maintaining clients throughout
the tri-state area. In 2004, Dodds & Eder was a finalist
in a national industry award for excellence.
